His Symphony Orchestra began as an ensemble for homeschool students in 2011. Upon the request of several homeschool families, Mary Wilcox—director—established a string group to fill this need. The group included parents, students, grandparents, and anyone interested in making music together.
The string orchestra has grown to include woodwind and brass instruments, developing into a full symphony; it is now a music ministry provided by the Ooltewah SDA Church. The group includes a variety of volunteer members including musicians from the Ooltewah SDA Church, the OAKS School, Collegedale Academy, SAU, and surrounding Collegedale, Chattanooga, and Ooltewah communities.
As part of the Ooltewah SDA Music Ministries, its purpose is threefold: 1) To provide music for worship services, 2) to provide a training organization for young musicians who derive inspiration by playing next to more professional and experienced players, and 3) to provide a place for anyone that enjoys making music to fellowship together.
The group usually performs two to three times a semester with optional invitational performances at surrounding churches depending on the individual availability of orchestra members.
